Step by step: what actually happens on a kayak tour

1. 1. Book your slot

   Most visitors book online a day or two ahead, though summer weekends fill faster - a morning departure is worth requesting specifically, since the sea is usually calmer and the light inside the cave is better before midday. You'll get a departure point (Benagil Beach or Carvalho Beach, depending on the operator) and a meeting time, typically 15-20 minutes before the tour starts. No deposit beyond the booking price is normal, and most operators confirm by text or email the evening before if weather looks marginal.

2. 2. Beach briefing and gear fitting

   You arrive at the beach and the guide fits everyone with a life jacket, hands out paddles, and runs through the basics: how to hold the paddle, what to do if you capsize (rare in the stable double kayaks used here), and the group's hand signals for the water. Phones and cameras go into a waterproof bag, usually supplied. This stage takes 10-15 minutes and is where any last questions about the cave rules or the route get answered.

3. 3. Paddle out along the coast

   The group sets off in pairs, with the guide leading from the front or circling the group from a solo kayak. The route hugs the base of the cliffs rather than heading straight out to sea, passing a handful of smaller sea caves and rock arches on the way. This stretch takes 15-25 minutes depending on the departure beach and is a good opportunity to get used to steering the double kayak before the cave itself comes into view.

4. 4. Entering Benagil Cave

   The guide watches the swell at the cave mouth and times each kayak's entry individually - on a calm day this is a smooth glide through the opening, on a choppier day it can mean a short pause bobbing outside while the guide waits for a lull. Groups typically enter one or two kayaks at a time rather than all at once, since the cave interior is a tight, shared space with limited room to maneuver.

5. 5. Your 5-10 minutes inside

   Once inside, the guide holds the group in place - there's no free paddling around the cave, both because of the Maritime Authority's time limit and because the interior is smaller than photos suggest. This is the payoff moment: the domed roof, the skylight hole overhead, the sand floor below, and an acoustic quality to the space that photos don't capture. Most guides know how to angle kayaks for photos and will happily take a phone for a shot of the whole group.

6. 6. The paddle back

   After the time limit, the group exits the cave in the same staggered way it entered and continues along the coast, usually to one or two further grottos or a quieter cove before turning back. The return paddle is typically shorter and calmer than the outbound leg, since it often runs with the coastal current rather than against it.
