Can I swim to Benagil Cave?

No. The Maritime Authority (Capitania do Porto de Portimão) banned unaccompanied swimming, kayaking, and SUP access to the cave in July 2024. Bringing your own kayak with a life jacket is allowed, but kayak rentals without a guide are banned. Fines for operators run from €300 to €216,000. The only legal way to enter is on a licensed guided tour.

How much does a Benagil cave tour cost?

Accepted Answer

Guided kayak and SUP tours start at €35–40 per person. Boat tours from Portimão, Lagos, or Albufeira marinas start around €25 per person. Prices vary by season and operator.

What time is the light best inside the cave?

Accepted Answer

The skylight window depends on the season - the sun angle changes through the year, so a single "best time" is misleading. Operators pick the departure time that works on the day of your tour.

Where do I park at Benagil Beach?

Accepted Answer

Four options: the public paid lot operated by Bombeiros Voluntários de Lagoa (€3/day, opened 2017, under 50 spaces), the small cliff-top free lot (fills by 9 AM in summer), Carvalho Beach (free, 15-minute coastal trail to Benagil), and Vale de Centeanes (free, 30-minute trail). Is Benagil worth visiting in winter?

Yes for the cliff-top views and quieter beach, but no for cave tours: November to April winter swell often cancels boat and kayak tours on a daily basis. Always check with your operator the day before.
