Carvoeiro: Benagil's Nearest Town
About ten minutes by car from Benagil - restaurants, shops, accommodation, Algar Seco and a sheltered town beach. Carvoeiro has no marina.

Carvoeiro is the bigger neighbour just west of Benagil. Many visitors base themselves here for the wider choice of restaurants and places to stay, then drive over to Benagil for the cave and the beaches.
Once a small fishing village, Carvoeiro has grown into one of the Algarve's best-known resort towns, though it has kept a compact centre built around a cove beach rather than a strip of high-rises. It sits roughly midway between Portimao and Armacao de Pera, with Lagoa the nearest larger town inland, which makes it a natural base for exploring this whole stretch of coast rather than just the Benagil area.

What Carvoeiro offers
Carvoeiro packs more into its town centre than Benagil does, from its own beach to a dramatic clifftop rock-formation walk. Here is the short version of each.
Praia do Carvoeiro (Praia Grande)
Carvoeiro's own beach fills a sheltered cove between two limestone headlands right at the edge of the town centre, known locally as Praia Grande. It is sandy, calm and a short walk from restaurants and shops, with a lively square just behind it that fills with bars and evening entertainment in summer. Parking near the beach is limited in high season, so expect to park a short walk away and continue on foot.

Carvoeiro has by far the widest choice of restaurants, cafes and bars in the area, from traditional seafood houses to casual burger spots and sunset terraces, plus small supermarkets, gift shops and beachwear stores that Benagil's village does not have. Accommodation
Carvoeiro has the broadest range of places to stay in the area: villas in the hills around Vale do Milho and Monte Dourado, mid-size resorts with pools and self-catering apartments, and a handful of larger hotels closer to the town centre. It generally has more availability and a wider spread of prices than Benagil village, especially at short notice. Algar Seco
Just east of Carvoeiro, Algar Seco is a weathered limestone headland of grottoes, blowholes and a tall rock pinnacle known as A Boneca, reached by a clifftop boardwalk under 600 metres long, the Passadicos do Carvoeiro. Steps lead down from the boardwalk to lower viewing platforms over the rock formations. It is a photography and geology stop rather than a swimming beach, and pairs naturally with a Carvoeiro visit since it starts a short walk from the town centre.
Getting there from Benagil
Carvoeiro is about 10 minutes by car from Benagil, along local roads through Lagoa's outskirts rather than a motorway. There is no direct bus service between the two villages, so most visitors drive, taxi, or arrange transfers through their accommodation.
The drive is straightforward and well signposted, and the two are close enough that a day based in one and an afternoon in the other is easy to combine. If you are staying in Carvoeiro and plan to visit Benagil Cave early to beat the crowds, budget the 10 minutes plus time to find parking in Benagil itself, since the village's public parking is limited - see our separate parking guide for the full breakdown.

Correcting a common misconception
Carvoeiro has no marina, despite what some listings and older guides suggest. The larger boat tours that visit Benagil Cave, whether by traditional boat, RIB or catamaran, depart mainly from Portimao marina, the closest proper marina to this stretch of coast, with additional departures from Lagos and Albufeira. If a tour is described as leaving from near Carvoeiro, check the actual meeting point before booking - it is very likely Portimao.
A handful of small local operators do run shorter RIB trips launched directly from Carvoeiro's beach rather than from a marina, typically covering Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha in around 90 minutes. These are the exception rather than the rule. For most visitors booking a boat tour, expect to travel to Portimao, about 20 minutes by car from Carvoeiro and a little longer from Benagil, to board, and treat that travel time as part of the day.
Where to base yourself: Carvoeiro or Benagil
Both work well as a base for exploring this stretch of coast; the right choice depends on what you want your trip to look like.
Base yourself in Carvoeiro if...
You want the widest choice of restaurants, bars and accommodation within walking distance, a proper town beach, and easy access to Algar Seco on foot. Carvoeiro suits longer stays, families who want more to do in the evenings, and anyone who would rather not be limited to Benagil's small selection of places to eat. The trade-off is the 10-minute drive each way to reach Benagil Cave and its beaches.
Stay in or near Benagil if...
You want to wake up close to the cave and its beach, walk to Praia do Carvalho and Praia da Marinha along the clifftop trail, and keep car journeys to a minimum during your stay. Benagil village is quieter in the evenings and has a much smaller choice of restaurants and accommodation, which books out early in peak season. It suits visitors whose trip is centred on Benagil itself rather than the wider area.
