Parking in Benagil (2025 Update)
All four Benagil parking options - the public paid lot operated by Bombeiros, the cliff-top free lot, the Carvalho Beach hack, and Vale de Centeanes - with GPS coordinates and walk times.
The short version
Benagil has four parking options. The main paid lot is operated by Bombeiros Voluntários de Lagoa (€3/day, opened 2017, under 50 spaces) - this is the most reliable peak-season option. The small free cliff-top lot fills by 9 AM in summer. The Carvalho Beach lot is free with a scenic 15-minute trail - the locals' choice in peak season. Vale de Centeanes is free, 30-minute trail, the quietest.

The Carvalho Beach hack
If you're driving in peak season (July–August) and don't want to gamble on the cliff-top free lot, park at Carvalho Beach instead. Free, and a 15-minute walk along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail puts you at Benagil Beach with cliff-top sea views the whole way. This is what locals do - and the trail is one of the best short walks on the Algarve coast.

Practical tips
- In summer, arrive before 9 AM if you want the cliff-top free lot.
- Peak season afternoons (Jul–Aug) - go straight to the paid lot or Carvalho.
Arrival-time strategy by season
In July and August, arrive before 8 AM if you want any realistic chance at the free or cheaper options - by mid-morning only the paid Bombeiros lot has meaningful turnover, and even that fills for stretches of the day. In the shoulder months (May, June, September, October), arriving before 9-9:30 AM is usually enough to get a space without a long wait. Outside those months, parking pressure is low on most days, with the exception of a handful of sunny weekends when Algarve day-trippers arrive in numbers.
Dropping off a non-parking companion
If you're driving with someone who isn't parking, for example because they're joining a tour while you deal with the car, the short stretch of road at the top near the public lot allows a brief pull-in to drop passengers before you continue on to park. Don't block the access lane for more than a minute or two - it's also used by tour operators and, if needed, emergency vehicles, and it is narrow enough that a stopped car can hold up everyone behind it.
Camper vans and motorhomes
Benagil's lots are signed against motorhomes and are not sized for larger vehicles - don't plan to park, and don't plan to overnight, a camper van in the village itself. Portugal's national rule allows homologated motorhomes to stay overnight for up to 48 hours in a municipality outside designated areas, but Benagil's small lots are exactly the kind of spot where local signage overrides that general allowance. If you're travelling by camper, the practical options are to park in Lagoa or Carvoeiro and cover the last stretch by taxi or a smaller vehicle, or to use one of the Algarve's designated motorhome areas further inland.
Accessibility
Benagil is built on a working fishing-village cliff, and the walk from every parking option down to the beach involves a slope. None of the routes described above are step-free or wheelchair accessible, and even the shortest walk, from the public lot, is a noticeable downhill stretch with an equally noticeable walk back up. Anyone with mobility needs should factor this in before booking a beach-based tour, and be aware that boarding small tour boats and kayaks at the water's edge also calls for a reasonable amount of balance and mobility.
