What Benagil is

Benagil is a small fishing village on the central Algarve coast, in the parish of Lagoa, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. Its main draw is the Algar de Benagil - the domed limestone sea cave with a circular skylight that you have probably already seen photos of - but the village offers much more: a sheltered beach, several others within an easy walk, the Seven Hanging Valleys cliff trail, family-run restaurants, and the kind of laid-back coastal pace that gets harder to find elsewhere on the Algarve. This guide covers all of it: how to visit the cave legally, where to park, which beaches and trails are worth the walk, where to eat, and where to stay.

About the skylight effect

When the sun reaches the right angle, a beam comes through the cave's circular ceiling opening and lights up the sand floor inside - the photo everyone comes for. The exact time of day shifts through the year because the sun angle shifts through the year.
