Best Time to Visit Benagil Cave
The 10:00–11:30 AM skylight window, the early-bird tour trick, and the season-by-season pattern for visiting Benagil Cave.
The short version
For the iconic photograph: time your arrival inside the cave between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM, when sunlight beams through the ceiling "eye" and lights up the sand floor. Book an early-bird tour (7:00–9:00 AM departure) and you'll be inside the cave during the peak window. Best months: May, June, September, October. Worst: November–April (winter swell cancels tours daily).
About the skylight effect
When the sun reaches the right angle, a beam comes through the cave's circular ceiling opening and lights up the sand floor inside - the photo everyone comes for. The exact time of day shifts through the year because the sun angle shifts through the year.
The skylight effect
The cave has a circular opening in its ceiling. When the sun is at the right angle, a beam reaches through the opening and lights up the sand floor inside - the photo everyone comes for. The exact window changes through the year because the sun angle changes through the year, so we don't quote a single time of day here. Your operator will pick a departure time that aims for the best beam on the day of your tour.
Season by season
July–August (peak)
Hot (30–35°C), crowded, and tour spots fill fast. Book 7+ days ahead. Parking pressure is highest. Cave is at its busiest - operators rotate groups in and out tightly to honour the 5–10 minute limit.
May, June, September, October (recommended)
RecommendedPleasant temperatures (22–28°C), water still warm enough to swim, fewer crowds, easier parking. The light inside the cave is at its best. If you can choose: come now.
November–April (off season)
Winter swell often cancels tours on a daily basis - operators decide each morning based on sea conditions. The clifftop viewpoint is still beautiful, but plan for a chance the kayak/boat tour won't run. Always check with your operator the day before.
