What the experience is like
Tours start with a short land briefing covering balance, paddle stroke, and what to expect once you're on the water - most first-timers are up and paddling within a few minutes. The group sets off standing (or kneeling, if you prefer more stability) and follows the coastline past a handful of smaller sea caves before reaching Benagil Cave itself. Because paddleboards sit higher above the water than kayaks, standing gives a clearer, higher sightline into the cave's domed skylight - many visitors rate it the best vantage point for photos. Inside, the group gets 5–10 minutes, the same Maritime Authority limit that applies to every craft, guided or self-guided. After the cave, most tours continue along the cliffs to one or two further grottos before heading back to the beach.
Who is it for?
Beginners are welcome - operators teach the basics on land before anyone touches the water, and guides stay close throughout. That said, SUP asks for more balance and core fitness than kayaking, where you're seated the whole time, so it suits reasonably active visitors better than very young children or anyone with limited mobility. SUP tours also run in smaller groups than kayak (typically four to eight paddlers), which some visitors prefer for a quieter, less crowded pace. Wind cancels SUP tours more readily than kayak - a paddleboard sits higher above the water and catches more wind, so operators reschedule or switch craft type more often when conditions are marginal.
Safety on a SUP tour
You'll wear a life jacket for the whole tour, including the minutes inside the cave - this is standard practice for every licensed operator, not an optional extra. Being a comfortable swimmer helps, since falling off the board is a normal, expected part of learning to balance, but you are never required to swim any distance; the guide and board are always close. Tours run in groups with one guide per group, and the guide has the final call on whether conditions inside the cave are safe that day - occasionally a tour will paddle the coastline and skip the cave itself if swell picks up, with no refund dispute expected from licensed operators. Sun exposure on the water is easy to underestimate - reapply sunscreen and wear a hat or rash vest if you burn easily.
About the skylight effect
When the sun reaches the right angle, a beam comes through the cave's circular ceiling opening and lights up the sand floor inside - the photo everyone comes for. The exact time of day shifts through the year because the sun angle shifts through the year.

Both crafts reach the same cave, with the same 5–10 minute limit once inside, so the choice mostly comes down to comfort and photos rather than which tour "gets you in". Kayak is the safer default: you're seated the whole time, it is rarely cancelled for wind, and it is usually a few euros cheaper. SUP asks more of your balance and is cancelled more often when it's windy, but standing gives a noticeably higher, clearer view down into the cave's skylight, and tours run in smaller groups. If you're travelling with young children, or the forecast looks marginal, book kayak. If you're a reasonably confident swimmer looking for the best vantage point for photos and don't mind a shorter list of available departure times, SUP is worth the small premium. Practical tips
- Book a morning slot when possible - sea and wind are usually calmer before midday.
- Wear a swimsuit under light clothing and bring a dry change of clothes for afterwards.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen only - Benagil's coastal waters sit within a protected area.
- If you wear glasses, secure them with a strap - they are easy to lose over the side of the board.
