How to Get to Benagil
Driving directions, GPS coordinates, and travel times from major Algarve hubs (Carvoeiro, Lagoa, Portimão, Albufeira, Lagos) and Faro Airport to Benagil Beach.
The short version
Benagil Beach is in the parish of Lagoa, central Algarve. From Faro Airport: ~55 minutes by car via the A22. From Lagos: 40 minutes. Albufeira: 30. Portimão: 20. The nearest town is Carvoeiro at about 10 minutes. There is no train station - driving or taxi is the only practical way.

From Faro Airport
The most direct route follows the A22 motorway (Via do Infante) west, then drops off the motorway onto secondary roads for the final stretch south into Lagoa and Benagil. Traffic on the A22 itself is generally light outside the July-August peak, when the unlit final road into the village can back up around midday. Expect close to an hour door to door, longer in peak-season traffic.
From Lisbon
The drive follows the A2 motorway south across the Alentejo, joins the A22 for the run west into the Algarve, then the same secondary roads into Benagil as from Faro. It's a genuine half-day-plus commitment: budget roughly 2.5-3 hours on a clear day, more with the toll and fuel stops most people make, and noticeably more on weekend holiday traffic leaving or returning to Lisbon.
From Albufeira
The route runs west along the A22, then south on the same final stretch as the other hubs - about 30 minutes in normal traffic. Albufeira is also the base many larger catamaran and boat tours to the cave depart from, so a fair number of Albufeira-based visitors see Benagil cave from the water rather than driving over at all.
From Lagos
The drive runs east along the A22 before turning south for the final stretch into Benagil, about 40 minutes in normal traffic. Lagos is also a common departure point for scenic speedboat tours that pass Ponta da Piedade on the way to the cave, so it's worth comparing driving over against booking a tour that starts from Lagos itself.

Public transport reality
There is no train to Benagil and the bus connection is unreliable for tour timing. If you're not driving, the most practical options are: a taxi from Carvoeiro (~€15) or Portimão (~€30), an Uber/Bolt (intermittent coverage), or booking a boat tour from a marina (Portimão/Lagos/Albufeira) so the operator handles the transport question.
The bus reality
The regional operator, EVA Transportes, serves the wider Lagoa and Carvoeiro area, but no frequent, dedicated line runs directly into Benagil village itself. The nearest practical connections are Lagoa, the parish's main town with more regular regional links toward Portimão and Faro, or Carvoeiro, which has a seasonal coastal service in summer. Either way, plan on covering the final stretch, roughly 10 minutes by car, with a taxi or ride-hailing app rather than expecting a bus stop in Benagil itself.
Taxi and TVDE (Uber/Bolt) guidance
A taxi from Carvoeiro runs around €15 and from Portimão around €30 for the trip into Benagil; agree the fare or confirm the meter is running before you set off, since informal quotes can vary. Uber and Bolt (TVDE) both operate across the wider Algarve, but coverage thins out around Benagil village itself, especially outside peak summer - don't assume you can hail a return ride from the beach on demand. For a same-day return, the safer approach is to book a taxi number in advance (your accommodation can usually provide one) or agree a pickup time with your driver rather than relying on an app finding a nearby car.
