Where to Eat in Benagil
Fish restaurants in Benagil village, casual spots by the beach, and the wider choice of places to eat around Carvoeiro.
The short version
Eat in the village or by the beach in Benagil, or drive about ten minutes to Carvoeiro for a wider choice. There are no cliff-top bars or restaurants in Benagil - the eating is in the village and near the beach.
Benagil is a small village, so the choice on the doorstep is limited but includes good fish and seafood. For more variety, Carvoeiro is about ten minutes away by car.
Eating in Benagil itself means eating in the village or right by the beach, not on some sea-view terrace perched dramatically above it. A couple of family-run restaurants sit on the road down to the cove and just above the sand, and a seasonal beach bar opens on Benagil beach itself in summer. That is genuinely the full list on the doorstep; anyone wanting more choice, from traditional seafood houses to casual cafes and a proper sunset drink, drives the ten minutes to Carvoeiro, which has by far the widest range of restaurants, bars and cafes in the area.
This guide splits the options into four groups: fish and seafood, casual spots and cafes, family-friendly places, and a handful of terraces worth timing for sunset. Opening hours in this part of the Algarve shift with the season, and small family-run places sometimes close for a day or two off-season without much notice, so treat the hours below as a starting point and check current opening times before planning a meal around any one place, especially outside the June-to-September peak.
Fish and seafood
Restaurante O Litoral
In Benagil villageRestaurante O Litoral sits on the road down into Benagil village, a short walk from the beach and the main car park, and has been serving fish and seafood here for years. The menu leans traditional: grilled sea bass and sea bream, octopus salad, bacalhau, and a seafood rice worth sharing. Most tables look out from a terrace with a view down towards the cove, a genuine sea view without any dramatic clifftop setting. It gets busy at lunchtime in summer, when boat and kayak tours finish up on the beach nearby, so arrive early or be ready to wait a little for a table. Parking is easy, with roadside spaces across the street. Check current opening hours before visiting, since small family-run restaurants in the village sometimes adjust days off-season.

O Pescador
In Benagil, just above the beachO Pescador occupies a century-old house just above Benagil beach, with a back terrace that looks down over the cove and the sea beyond, a sea view without being a clifftop restaurant. The kitchen focuses on fresh, locally caught fish, grilled simply, alongside a broader Portuguese and international menu. It is one of the more established names in the village and gets a steady flow of visitors straight off the beach, so summer lunchtimes can mean a short wait for a table. Come for the setting as much as the food: few places in Benagil combine a sea view with this kind of proximity to the sand. As with everywhere in the village, check current opening hours in advance, particularly outside peak season.

Jota Lita
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)Jota Lita has been a Carvoeiro fixture since 1988, tucked away on Estrada do Farol and popular enough that a reservation is close to essential. The signature dish is a fish cataplana, the classic Algarve seafood stew cooked with clams, prawns and chorizo, alongside garlic butter prawns and grilled fish and meat. It is dinner only, family-run, and the kind of place locals recommend without hesitation. The dining room is unpretentious rather than scenic, so come for the cooking rather than a view. Book ahead if you can, especially in July and August, since walk-ins are often turned away once the small dining room fills.
Long-running Carvoeiro restaurant known for fish cataplana and garlic prawns. Dinner only and frequently fully booked; reserve ahead.
Rei das Praias
~15 min by car (Praia dos Caneiros)Rei das Praias sits directly on Praia dos Caneiros, a beach between Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, about 15 minutes by car from Benagil. Running since 1976 and now in its second generation, it specialises in whole fish barbecued over charcoal rather than butterflied, kept moist and bought fresh from the morning fish market. It has grown into an upmarket beach restaurant with a serious wine list, but the setting is still simple: tables a few steps from the sand. It is further from Benagil than the other options here, so treat it as a half-day out combined with a swim at Caneiros, rather than a quick lunch stop.

Casual spots and cafes
Beach bar at Praia de Benagil
On Benagil beachA small, seasonal bar operates right on Benagil beach in the warmer months, serving drinks, snacks and simple food to people straight off the sand or between boat and kayak trips into the cave. It has no fixed hours published anywhere reliable: opening depends on the season and the weather, and it may not be running at all outside roughly April to October. Treat it as a bonus rather than something to plan a meal around, and have a backup in the village or Carvoeiro if you are relying on lunch by the water. It is the closest thing Benagil has to a beach cafe, and the only food option actually on the sand.

Central Cafe
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)Central Cafe sits in the middle of Carvoeiro, beside the taxi rank, and runs from around 9 AM until late every day, which makes it one of the more reliable all-day options in town. The menu mixes Portuguese standards with homemade burgers, salads, steaks and fresh fish, so it works equally well for a quick coffee, a late breakfast or a proper dinner. It is casual, central and easy to find on foot from anywhere in Carvoeiro, which makes it a sensible fallback if a more specific restaurant on this list is fully booked.

MataBixo
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)MataBixo has been a fixture in Carvoeiro since 2000, known for comfort food rather than fine dining: burgers, hot dogs, toasties, and a long drinks list that includes a wide range of gins alongside cocktails and mocktails. It has sea views from its tables, without the price tag of the more formal restaurants nearby, and suits a relaxed lunch or an evening drink just as well. It is a good pick after a day at the beach when a full sit-down seafood dinner feels like too much.

Family-friendly
Dumar d'Benagil
In Benagil villageDumar d'Benagil sits up in the village, away from the busier stretch near the beach, on a terrace with views over the rooftops to the sea. It is family-run, with a menu of authentic Portuguese dishes, fish, meat and grilled calamari alongside three vegan options, which is unusual for a small village restaurant and useful if your group has mixed dietary needs. The quieter setting away from the beach crowds also makes it a comfortable choice with children in tow. Historically closed on Saturdays; as with all restaurants on this page, confirm current opening days before you go.

O Rafaiol
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)O Rafaiol in Carvoeiro has a genuine kids' menu, a rarity worth calling out on a coast where many restaurants cater mainly to adults, plus a terrace where the grown-ups can order a cocktail from mid-afternoon. The wider menu has been refreshed under newer management, and the setting is relaxed rather than formal, which suits families who want an easy meal without managing a picky eater from an adult menu. It is a practical choice for an evening in Carvoeiro with young children.

Levels
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)Levels sits right on Carvoeiro's main beach, with an ocean view from most tables, and works equally well as a daytime cafe stop with children or a more relaxed sunset drink later on. The setting on the sand makes it easy to combine with a swim, without the more formal atmosphere of a sit-down seafood restaurant. It is casual enough for a quick snack and unhurried enough to linger over a coffee while children play nearby.

Sunset spots
Boneca Bar
~10 min by car (Algar Seco, Carvoeiro)Boneca Bar has operated among the Algar Seco rock formations, just outside Carvoeiro, since 1969, and its terrace has one of the best sea views in the area, especially as the sun goes down. Tunnels lead from the terrace down through the rock to small windows and openings over the water, which makes it as much a short outing as a meal. The kitchen serves traditional charcoal-grilled fish and meat. It is a genuine sea-view spot rather than anything overlooking Benagil itself, about ten minutes by car, and worth timing your visit for late afternoon if sunset is the goal.

Sky Bar Carvoeiro
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)Sky Bar Carvoeiro is the rooftop terrace at the Tivoli Carvoeiro hotel, with a wide, open view over the ocean and a cocktail and light-bites menu built for watching the sun go down. It has become one of the best-known sunset spots in the area, which means it also gets busy: arrive with time to spare in high season if you want a table for the view rather than a spot at the bar. It is a smarter, more polished option than the casual beach bars nearby, and priced accordingly.

O Bote Beach Bar
~10 min by car (Carvoeiro)O Bote Beach Bar sits on Carvoeiro's main beach with a simple sun terrace facing the sea, a more relaxed and less expensive alternative to the hotel rooftop bar nearby. It suits a casual sunset drink or a snack straight after a swim, without a dress code or a reservation. Combine it with a stroll along Carvoeiro's seafront beforehand, since it sits right in the middle of the beach and the town.

Reservations, payment and seasonal hours
Reservations
Benagil village has only a handful of restaurants, so booking ahead matters more than the small size of the place suggests, especially for dinner in July and August. Popular Carvoeiro restaurants such as Jota Lita are often fully booked without a reservation; call or book online a day or more ahead in peak season. Casual cafes and beach bars generally do not take reservations and work on a first-come basis.
Cash and card
Card payment, including contactless and MB Way, is widely accepted at restaurants around Benagil and Carvoeiro, but small family-run places and seasonal beach bars sometimes prefer cash or have a minimum card spend. Carry some cash as a backup, particularly for the beach bar on Benagil sand and smaller village spots.
Seasonal closures
Many restaurants around Benagil and Carvoeiro scale back or close for part of the low season, roughly November to March, and the beach bar on Benagil beach may not open at all outside the warmer months. Weekly closing days also vary and sometimes change year to year. Whatever time of year you are visiting, check a restaurant's current status, whether by phone, its Facebook or Instagram page, or a recent review, before building a meal plan around it, rather than relying on hours quoted online.
